What is authorizing a representative on a CRA account?

Authorizing someone in your Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) account means allowing them to represent you in certain tax matters. This person could be a family member, friend, or a professional like an accountant. In the past, to authorize a representative you filled out a T1013 form for authorization, while now the CRA encourages clients to manage authorizations directly through their CRA accounts. This ensures a smoother and more direct process for granting access to your tax information.

Once you’ve set it up, your representative can help you out with your taxes. They can chat with the CRA on your behalf and make sure things are in order. It’s important to keep the info up to date, like if your representative changes or if you want to stop them from helping you. This way, everything runs smoothly, and you get the help you need with your taxes.
